Consumption habits are what make or break us in terms of our health and weight. That is why you should try and develop healthy consumption habits as early in life as possible. One of the most beneficial daily intakes is water.
Water is the main component of our bodies –our bodies are comprised of 70% water. Knowing this, it can be seen how important it is to provide our bodies with a substantial amount of water per day. It is recommended to drink between 8 and 10 glasses of water everyday. It may seem excessive, but we lose water throughout the day when we sweat, breathe and urinate. If we do not drink enough water, we can become dehydrated. As our lungs need moisture to function, we cannot breathe properly if we are dehydrated. Dehydration also leads to headaches and feeling lightheaded. Not consuming enough water every day also leads to gaining excess body fat and poor muscle tone.
Drinks To Avoid
The drinks to avoid include all those containing excess amounts of sugar. Sugar equals calories, and if we cannot burn these calories during the day, they turn into fat cells which result in weight gain. Here is a list of drinks to avoid:
- Sodas
- Energy drinks
- Slurpees
- Frappuccinos
Drinks that should be consumed in moderation include alcoholic and caffeinated (eg. Coffee and soda) beverages. You might think that these drinks contain water, so therefore they quench your thirst. In actual fact, these beverages speed up the elimination of fluid from the body which can result in dehydration.
For Those Who Don’t Like Water
If you avoid water because of the lack of flavour, strange odour or taste, then:
-Drink bottled spring water. There are many different brands to choose from and these waters do not have a weird smell or taste. A good tip for choosing a water brand: Check the TDS of the bottled water. TDS stands for Total Dissolved Solids. So this is the amount of non-water substances that are in the water. Choose the water brand that has the lowest TDS.
-Add some natural citrus to your water. For example, some slices of lemon or lime make water taste very refreshing and flavoursome.
Water is extremely beneficial to any weight loss plan and helps to detoxify the body. Water can also reduce the appearance of cellulite.
So in conclusion, water is of paramount importance in all areas of life and should be consumed in abundance.
