Many people gain weight during the course of their lives without understanding why. It is also not only the appearance of the added weight that is the problem, but the severe health consequences that come with it. This article will help you discover the main causes of weight gain so that you can prevent it.

Overeating. An obvious cause of weight gain and yet many people are guilty of this. Portions have grown significantly larger over the years and no one questions the sizes. People will fill an entire plate with food and finish all of it, regardless of how bloated and uncomfortable it makes them feel. After all, a person’s stomach is only the size of their two fists pressed together, so portions are unnecessarily large. You should consider your portions more carefully and eat until you feel satisfied – you do not even need to feel ‘full’.

Unhealthy Food Items. Many of the foods we consume these days do not contain many nutrients. This is especially true for most fast foods. With fast foods, not only does the food lack nutrients, but it is high in fat and contains an obscene amount of calories. Try to eat balanced home cooked meals with the right amount of dairy, protein, carbohydrates and vegetables. Eat fast food only in moderation and have healthy snacks between meals such as nuts, fruit, vegetables and yogurt. Also make healthy substitutes – substitute white bread with whole-wheat, full cream milk with 2% low fat, white rice with brown rice etc.

Regularly Skipping Meals. People often think that if you eat fewer meals everyday, you will lose weight. This is definitely not the case. If the body misses a meal, the food burning process is slowed right down. The body believes that it will not receive another meal in the near future, so when you do eat something, the body is not prepared for the amount of calories you consume. You should eat regularly – it is even better to eat five small meals a day than having three big meals a day. It is also better to eat a lot at breakfast time, and very little at night. As the saying goes – breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dine like a pauper.

Drinking Unhealthy Liquids. A lot of drinks are loaded with sugar and calories. If these calories are not burnt off throughout the course of your day, they will be stored as fat. You should avoid sodas and other sugar loaded drinks and drink the recommended amount of water everyday, which is 8 to 10 glasses. Drinking a lot of water also aids in weight loss.

A Sedentary Lifestyle. Without exercise, calories consumed during the day are not used up and are stored in fat cells. In addition, living a life without exercise leads to a lot of health problems. Cardiovascular exercises should be performed each day to keep to the heart and other vital organs healthy. Exercise is great way to relieve stress; it speeds up the metabolism and provides you with energy that you need to lead a happy day to day life.

Now that you understand the causes of weight gain, you are well equipped to actively prevent them.
